At the end of Year 11 boys participate in a work experience scheme managed by the School’s Work Experience Officer. It is a condition of entry into the Sixth Form that boys undertake a one week work experience placement.
We encourage boys to do more than one week if possible, especially when they are undecided on career choice. This helps them to find out more about an industry, commerce or a profession in order to explore a particular career and increase their social and economic awareness. Every year boys undertake placements in an exciting range of fields including Banking, Law, Medicine, PR, Advertising and Media; gaining an insight into possible careers but also, in many cases, making invaluable contacts for the future.
However, equally as important for the boys is the opportunity to experience key elements of the workplace such as time keeping, appropriate dress, codes of conduct, taking responsibility; all of which will be vital in ensuring their future success. They may also experience and learn how to cope with quite difficult situations, and will share in the sense of achievement of a job well done.
We have strong links with a number of employers including Pentland Brands, WSP Group and Shell, all of whom offer excellent work experience programmes to our boys. There is a thriving Young Enterprise Group, and the School also takes up many other opportunities including those offered by schemes and organisations such as the Smallpiece Trust (with some funding available from the Foundation through the Physics Department). Boys are also strongly encouraged to do work experience in the Sixth Form and go on to organise excellent work placements for themselves; setting themselves in excellent stead for their future careers.
