The Art Department has two large painting and drawing studios, one for fine art based activities including printmaking (etching and relief) and the second for sculpture and three-dimensional work. There are two further studios, one is equipped for silkscreen printing work and graphic design and the other is a Sixth Form painting studio, where each ‘A’ Level student is allocated their own personal work space. There is also a well-equipped ceramics studio with a kiln room and damp store. A small photographic dark room with several enlargers allows the students to develop and print their own black and white photographs. Finally, the department has an extensive Art Library. These different studio areas enable us to establish four distinct "spheres of influence" within the department. |
Each member of the art teaching staff has a specific area of expertise: 1. Drawing and
Painting |

All Year 7 and 8 pupils will study aspects of two-dimensional art (drawing/ painting and print making) and three-dimensional art (ceramics and sculpture) in the first two years. The aim of the course is to encourage and develop an awareness of and critical response to the environment and to develop creative skills and promote self-awareness, confidence and individual responses through the use of the visual language. In Year 9 and 10, the boys may opt to take Art or Ceramics at GCSE. |
| Both AS and
A2 are offered in the Sixth Form. Art appreciation and Art History
are given full emphasis throughout the course. The Department also offers a great many out-of-school activities (life drawing, photography, art clubs, pottery) and contributes fully to the life and needs of the School. |

Life Drawing Classes at HABS provide links between the Boys' and Girls' Schools. Every week, 20 to 25 GCSE and A Level Art students (from the Boys' and the Girls' Schools) develop their drawing skills from a life model in Studio 3 in the Boys' School Art Department. These sessions are lead by Mr Todhunter and Mr Keenleyside. Each week a variety of approaches to drawing are tackled, using a wide range of different media. The drawings, sketches and studies are then used by the individual students to help develop and enhance their own personal Art coursework. |
