Summer Concert 2008
Had you been in the vicinity of the Bourne Hall on Thursday 8th May, you may have been forgiven for thinking that you had stumbled across the last night of the Proms. Indeed, the hall was a scene of patriotic fervour, with even the more reserved among the audience waving flags to the strains of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, performed with gusto by Symphony Orchestra. The crowd was, however, more than a little excited about having something else (literally) up their sleeves! At the encore, taking their cue from Mr. Muhley, they fired a barrage of party poppers into the air, after sitting armed and ready for the whole of the second half.
The evening displayed a great variety of musical talent from boys throughout the school, with ensembles ranging from an impressively tight performance by the Jazz Flutes, to the massed forces of the Concert Band, Year 11 Band and the Wind Sinfonia playing “Star Wars” and a wonderful display of advanced musicianship heard from the String Quintet.
All the large school ensembles put in an appearance, which made for a jam packed and fast paced programme. It also served as a very fitting occasion to bid farewell to some illustrious leavers. Our Upper Sixth boys will be greatly missed for their many and varied contributions to the department during their time with us.
The evening also provided an opportunity to say a fond farewell to Richard West and to thank him for his work and dedication to the department. After his performance of “New York, New York” with the Big Band, he received a well-deserved standing ovation and prolonged applause from students, staff and audience alike. We send our warmest good wishes for his future at Christ College, Brecon, and our thanks for all he has done here at Habs.
