"I benefited throughout my life from a school where the intellectual stimulus was enormous and there was full appreciation for non-academic pursuits." |
Lord Brittan |
On February 8th, HABS Philosophy Society played host to Professor Tim Crane of Peterhouse, Cambridge, a leading figure in philosophy of mind who argues for a non-physicalist account of mentality. In his talk, he laid down the problem of giving an adequate explanation of what the mind is, and whether it can be reduced to the brain, then gave his argument that mental states emerge from the brain but cannot be reduced to the physical, and have causal powers of their own in conjunction with physical brain states. The talk was especially interesting given the recent visit from Professor David Papineau, his friend and philosophical rival.

Professor Crane said afterwards that he really enjoyed the visit, and was very impressed with the questions he received from the eager audience of the Boys' and Girls' school, as well as philosophy students from North London Collegiate School.
The next speaker for HABS Philosophy Society will be Professor Terence Irwin of Keble College, Oxford, a specialist in ancient Greek philosophy and the history of ethics, who will be visiting on 1st March.
