Holocaust survivor visits Habs

Friday 5th February saw the now annual visit of a Holocaust Survivor to speak to Year 9 as part of their studies in Theology and Philosophy. Hermann Hirschberger spoke to the whole year group about his experiences growing up as a Jew in Nazi Germany and the challenges he faced. His account of school life under Nazi rule and his painful separation from his parents, aged only 12, was very vivid. He challenged the boys about racial hatred, which he described as mankind’s worst characteristic.

After he had spoken, Mr Hirschberger fielded questions from the boys before the afternoon proceeded with a consideration of other more recent genocides, including those in Rwanda and the Balkans. The mood of the afternoon was serious and contemplative and the boys approached the day with maturity.
