Colours presented at Fraser Bird lunch
The annual Fraser Bird cricket match took place yesterday and resulted in a close and exciting game, which was eventually won by the invitation XI, captained by Michael Yeabsley, by just 7 runs.
Featuring a strong Radlett and Aldenham presence, the Fraser Bird side batted first, as is customary, but were soon in trouble after a fine opening spell from Ben Cherkas and Keshal Patel with Sheilen Patel (OH), Lewis Jenkins (OH) and the Radlett captain, Shane Burger, amongst their victims.
Lunch was taken with the score on 82 for 6 as players and spectators repaired to the Old Refectory for a splendid meal, after which the Headmaster welcomed our visitors and thanked the Cricket staff for their sterling efforts during the course of another busy and successful season. He then presented School Colours for Cricket to the following boys:
Nishanth Selvakumar
(Year 11)
Keshal Patel
(U6)
Basil Letts
(U6)
Tom Edrich (captain)
(L6)
Seb Schusman
(U6)
Kushal Patel
(L6)
Jonathan Miller
(U6)
Miller was also presented with his scarf, having previously been awarded colours for rugby.
As so often the case in this game, batting appeared easier after the interval and Nick Fielden (OH) reached his half century before late runs from Michael Yeabsley (OH) took the total past 200. The declaration eventually came at 220 for 9, leaving the school to score at about 5 runs per over to reach its target.
Unlike the previous day against Doug Yeabsley’s XI, the boys had a real ‘go’ this time and, despite losing wickets at regular intervals, almost succeeded. Kushal Patel (45) and Karan Setia (62) led the way but finally last man Ben Cherkas was stumped off the bowling of Shane Burger with Habs 8 runs short of victory.
