Poetry recitation competition finals

Twelve boys made it through to the Final of this year’s Poetry Recitation competition, held in the last week of term.

We were privileged to have judging the competition a lover of poetry in Mr. Jon Corrall, retired Deputy Head (Pastoral). He opened the event by speaking with great persuasiveness about the value of learning poetry by heart, recalling his own experiences of first doing so some 50 years ago.

The eventual winners, each presented with a certificate and an anthology of modern poetry. were:

YEAR 7: Rahul Nagpaul (Hendersons): Ice Cream by Michaela Morgan
YEAR 8: Finn O’Riordain (Russells): The Listeners by Walter de la Mare
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Edward Upson (Russells): The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Mr. Corrall commented that the boys who recited were ‘participating in a noble and ancient tradition’, and it was a delight to see such strong and varied competition. Congratulations to all who took part, and especially to the winners.
