ISGA Golf team reach regional final
Habs Golf team reached the Area 4 regional final of the ISGA matchplay knockout competition by seeing off the challenge of Brentwood ‘A’ team at Harpenden Golf Club. Habs no.1 Will Aldred eventually secured a 2&1 win in the opening match by winning the 16th hole before closing out the match with a birdie at the par 5 17th. As is usual with Habs matches, there was a dramatic twist, this time in match 2 involving Aidan Kovenklioglu. Needing to win the final hole, the Habs player looked in good shape on the 18th green in regulation before a fine pitch shot to just 18 inches by his opponent meant Kovenklioglu seemingly had to make his birdie putt to have any chance. When the putt stopped on the lip of the hole it appeared the game was lost, but the Brentwood player missed the short putt giving Habs a reprieve and sending the match into extra holes.

The Habs man then had a stroke of good fortune close to a silver birch tree on the first hole of sudden death, and played a fine approach to 15 feet of the pin, while his opponent took three to reach the front edge of the green. With the luxury of two putts for the match, Kovenklioglu delivered the second crucial point, meaning that Amar Vaghela’s 2 hole defeat in match 3 was academic.
Habs now look forward to a repeat of last year’s final against Mill Hill, where Vaghela’s birdie on the 2nd hole of sudden death sent Habs through to the national finals at Lingfield Park. The winers of this year’s final can look forward to a trip to Carnoustie in Scotland on 22nd and 23rd April.
