"Habs opened my eyes to new worlds and unimagined opportunities." |
Professor Peter Parham FRS, Stanford University School of Medicine, USA. |
Ten Habs boys who study two modern languages were selected to go to Oxford University for the day as an insight of where languages can take you after finishing school.
One arrival in Oxford, the boys visited the Ashmolean Museum, which was full of art and lots of ancient collections from all around the world. A particular favourite was the Ancient Chinese and Vietnamese section with all of the different rich varieties of art. The boys were also very fortunate to have a tour of the Modern Languages Library which had nearly every bookimaginable as well as many interesting historical artefacts. The Habs group were joined by other schools from South London, some of them being part of the Haberdashers’ Foundation so our boys were able to meet pupils from different schools as well as the students at Oxford University.
After a delicious fish and chip lunch in Sommerville College’s beautiful antique dining room (where the students eat every day!) the group were given a tour around the College by an undergraduate, which was very revealing, as they got to see all of the College’s facilities and were even privileged enough to see what an undergraduate’s bedroom looks like!
For many boys, the best part of the day was the language session with one of Oxford’s French Tutors, where the boys examined how French is different to English in ways that might not be explored at school. They looked at the challenges of translating Harry Potter names into French and why certain names remain the same in every language.
To finish the day the students wereprivileged to have a Q & A session with six undergraduates to ask any general questions about studying at University. On the way back to the minibus the boys bumped into Tom Ough (OH) who was just starting his second term reading English and clearly loving it!
Thanks on behalf of all who went on the trip go to Mr Thackrey for supervising and taking us on the day out and to Mr Thompson for his organisation.
