Year 6 Footballers continue to win.

Having won the Wix shield (County Cup) at the end of April, the Prep school U11 team travelled to St Albans City football ground on Thursday 10th May to compete in the final of the 7 a side Centenary shield hoping to complete a double and win both in the same season, a feat managed only once in the history of the competitions by Radlett Prep in 2007.

The team first faced Greneway School from Royston in their semi final taking a commanding 3-0 lead by midway through the first half. What looked like a comfortable victory however began to grow into an ever bigger uncertainty as the team lost their shape in the midfield conceding goals either side of half time and then again in the closing minutes of the game. Habs grew more nervous and in some frantic defending almost conceded another right on the full time whistle. The match went into extra time and with some changes in formation Habs began to threaten again but the deadlock remained and the result was a penalty shoot out to see who would progress. The team kept their nerve not missing any of the spot kicks and by the fourth attempt had only to score to seal the victory. Josh Edwards duly obliged and Habs place in the final against Codicote was secured.

The final proved less tense and goals in either half allowed the team to relax and play some commanding football. A goal kick error did allow Codicote to reply but once Joe Leslie had restored the lead, Habs threatened constantly with several chances falling to Freddy Nash as the opposition gave him more freedom in their efforts to force an equaliser at the other end of the pitch The team secured Habs first success in the Centenary shield. Their ability to move the ball with some free flowing football proved too difficult to defend for most of our opposition during the season and indeed since the start in January they have remained undefeated playing over 30 matches winning every game bar one which was a 1-1 draw with Bedford Modern. Well done to all the boys who have made up this squad, they have worked hard for each other, their desire and commitment has been the key to their success.

Year 5 Berkhamsted Football Tournament

We played some brilliant football with passion and determination. In fact, the boys came top of the table with Berkhamsted School. Unfortunately we were pipped into the runners-up spot only on goal difference! A great event and the boys made us very proud.

Wix County Cup

With hatricks by both Joe Leslie and Freddy Nash, the U11 Habs Prep team secured a 6-2 victory against Radlett in the Wix County Cup final on April 30th. Dominating much of the game with  commanding mid- field performances by Josh Edwards and Oliver Russell, Radlett were never allowed to settle into their rhythm and some intelligent distribution of the ball allowed numerous scoring opportunities for the Habs front three. By half time the team had a commanding 3-1 lead and with two more goals early in the second half the opposition’s heads went down and only threatened through our defensive errors rather than chances they created.
The team now has the U11 7 a side version of the Wix trophy to look forward to when they compete in the semi finals at Clarence Park St Albans on the 10th May, hoping to make this a first for Habs in securing both trophies in the same season.

Cross country success

Jamie Harper has continued his outstanding form since half term winning the U 11 Keble X Country Race on an undulating course at Trent Park, Cockfosters on February 23rd by a comfortable 30 second margin and then on Wednesday March 7th he ran the fastest individual leg of the Belmont Oti 6 man X Country relay. Over a very muddy 1400m course Jamie ran 4mins 42 secs  with only one other runner managing to break the 5 minute barrier.
In both events Jamie has been ably supported by Louis Flinn, Nathan Kaye, Freddy Nash, Andrew Rogers and Henry Rocha. At Keble we had three runners in the top ten but had to settle for second place in the team title being narrowly beaten by Heathmount school and then again in the Oti Relay despite getting ever closer to the race leaders Gayhurst school from Gerrards Cross, Habs were unable to bridge the gap of 10 seconds despite valiant efforts from Andrew Rogers and Louis Flinn on the last two legs.
The Hereward House X Country is the last remaining fixture on the 23rd March where Jamie will hope to complete his double hatrick of wins and the team will be looking to finish the season with an overall win.

Swimming success

Felix, Louis, Alex and Thomas swam in the district relay championships at Woodside leisure centre on Friday evening. The competition as always was tough but the boys won all the trophies on offer. On winning the Hertfordshire title they are automatically entered into the National Finals with 15 other teams. This will take place at Ponds Pool , Sheffield in June.

Prep School Under 11 Rugby 2011

The Under 11 rugby season has been outstanding and as the term has progressed both the A and B teams have gone from strength to strength and since the Ireland tour at half term the A team have scored 296 points without conceding any in the six matches played since their return.
Their matches have been marked by some outstanding team performances both from the forwards in securing the ball at the breakdown and by intelligent running from the backs opening up opposition defences for try scoring opportunities. The early fixtures showed promise but the hard work put in on tour in Dublin took the degree of understanding amongst the players to a new level and they were able to transfer that to our remaining fixtures after half term.

The A team’s highlight of the season was their 7-0 win over Chesham in a very physical game with Nadav Blane Damelin driving over the line from 15 meters out to score the match winning try in the last 2 minutes of the game. The B teams highlight was their 42-7 win over St Columbas as Ben Schwarzmann and Ollie Nathanson combined with their strong running to cut through the opposition defence virtually every time they were in possession of the ball.
Romeo Box Fahy has been a prolific try scorer for the A team but the success has been based on the squad’s strength in depth, Sam Warner, Louis Flinn, Nadav Blane Damelin and Josh Edwards supplying flair in the backs to link with the power of Freddy Nash, Oliver Hocking and Luckshman Sivathasan in the forwards. In the B team Aron Rosenthal and Ali Talibhusein have made great improvements showing considerable strength on the ball.  The ability to move the ball through the hands and the confidence in direct running set this squad apart they will have much to offer as they move through the main school.

Prep Rugby Dublin Tour

Following their very successful rugby tour to Dublin during the first week of half term, the Under 11 A and B teams have returned to their domestic fixtures in fine form. The boys enjoyed convincing wins over The Catholic University school, 45-0 for the A team and 50-5 for the B team. Since being on tour they have scored over 200 points between them, without  conceding a single try in their fixtures against Northwood Prep and Belmont.

Turning his coaching skills to the younger end of the rugby world, Mr Ian Matthews has developed some great running backs in the A team in Romeo Box Fahy, Sam Warner and Josh Edwards, whilst the tenacity of forwards such as Freddy Nash has helped to secure some good possession for the team to work with. Romeo at present is the highest points scorer, running in 12 tries in the last two games. There are now some difficult fixtures ahead but the Under 11’s are on course for one of their most successful seasons for many years.

Well done Oliver!

Oliver plays rugby with Old Albanians U11’s, and on Sunday reached the final of the ‘Saracens U11 Land Rover Premiership Cup’.  A 5–5 draw with Ealing in the final meant both sides shared the coveted title.  It is one of the strongest tournaments of the season, with top teams from all over the South-East taking part.  The boys played fantastically well all day, with a great team spirit, and have been invited to take part in the ‘Parade of Champions’ at Twickenham, as part of the Aviva Premiership Final on Saturday 26th May 2012.

Justin Melck, Saracens No.8, presented the prizes before the competing teams went to watch the Premiership game between Saracens and Sale Sharks at Vicarage Road – which Saracens won!

U9 B match vs Bedford, we won 8-6! Well done boys.

Year 6 Rugby Match Against Bedford Modern

It was a sunny Saturday morning and the Habs A team was getting ready for their second match of the season.

Habs  won the toss and decided to kick off.  We started off well and held a comfortable 21-0 lead at half time. In the second half Bedford Modern were determined not to give up without a fight.  We were in a very comfortable position, but Bedford Modern did manage to score 1 converted try.  The Habs final score was a very convincing 35- 7.

A terrific performance from Josh who scored 1 try and successfully converted all the others.  Nadav made some outstanding runs on the wing including 2 tries and Romeo scored a fine solo try running from one end of the pitch to the other diving in under the posts. The forwards proved impressive with their aggression and enthusiasm on the field. A great performance and our momentum will hopefully spur us on for our next match.
