Under leaden skies, the 2010 Golf tour got underway at the world famous La Manga resort in Spain.
On day 1, 16 boys and 3 members of staff took on the North course whose fast greens immediately caused problems for the group. Ben Cherkas took an early lead in the tournament with a superb 38 points, although he was closely followed by Yash Patel, and 2008 champion Vivek Patni, who also picked up the nearest the pin prize, both lying just 2 points behind. Shot of the day went to James Soo after a splendid 6 iron to the final green set up a closing birdie 3, earning a round of applause from the audience of hotel guests.
Day 2, known as "moving day", saw Patel stamp his authority on the contest, with an astounding 41 points over the tight West course in challenging windy conditions. 2009 runner up Aidan Kovenklioglu earned the nearest the pin prize at the 4th hole with a well controlled iron shot to just 3 feet from the pin, while debutant Joel Citron won shot of the day with a chip-in for a par on the par 5 15th hole.
The final round over the Championship South course was played largely in rainy conditions which added to the challenge of the many water hazards, but Patel held his nerve and again took the honours with 37 points to secure the tour title for 2010. Shots of the day prizes went to Jack Myers and David Fernie, while Ben Cherkas finished as runner up, a distant 16 points behind the overall winner.
Special mention must be made of the younger boys in the group, who performed supremely well over some very difficult golf holes in testing conditions. The future of Golf at Habs is very bright as these youngsters will inevitably improve over the coming years.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the Golf tour is the cameraderie shown by boys from all year groups, which makes the trip a real pleasure for all involved. We are already looking forward to the 2011 event, where we will hope to return to the tour's traditional home of Vilamoura in Portugal.
