The Art department is well equipped with five studios for drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, digital design, textiles and ceramics.
During Years 7 and 8, pupils are taught a wide range of core artistic skills. These include the basic elements of line, tone, colour, shape, form, pattern and texture. Various techniques and skills including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and print-making are also explored. Each boy is issued with a sketchbook in which classwork is documented then developed at home.
Years 9, 10 and 11 find pupils working towards the GCSE qualification. A broader artistic knowledge is developed during these years through coursework which links to the work of established artists, designers, styles and movements. In the Sixth Form, Year 12 students study towards their AS Level by developing a more personal and independent approach to their artwork. In Year 13, A2 culminates in the full exploration and arrival at a student’s personal style.
Regular visits to London galleries broaden pupils understanding and during the October half term, an expedition abroad is offered. Destinations have included Paris, Barcelona, Tuscany, Nice, Berlin, Istanbul and New York. The department also provides a series of specialist study days for examinees, in conjunction with the Royal Academy and the Henry Moore Foundation.
The art experience is broadened through regular clubs at lunchtime and after school for working on general art and continuing their classwork. Life drawing is offered as a popular Co-curricular activity after school and students involved in the school’s Community Service have the opportunity to create props and scenery for plays.
Each year the department organises presentations by visiting artists and designers. A regular visitor, Professor Anthony Slinn, shares his enthusiasm for art and artists and speaks about the life and work of a variety of artists including those as diverse as Modigliani, Henry Moore, Monet and Salvador Dali.
We undertake to give all our students a comprehensive understanding of and an enthusiasm for Art and in the senior years enhance the expertise of those that choose to pursue a career in Architecture, Product Design, Graphic Design and the Fine Arts.
