Learning Outside the Classroom

Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) is the use of places other than the classroom for teaching and learning. It is about getting children and young people out and about, providing them with challenging, exciting and different experiences to help them learn.

We work with School Outdoor Learning to enhance our outdoor learning programme and our outdoor classroom provides an opportunity to enhance the boys’ learning further. Our key principles underpinning outdoor learning are:

  • We quickly get beyond the assumption that outdoors is for play and indoors is for learning in a school environment.
  • Children grow, learn and thrive better when connected to the natural world
  • The pace of learning is important. Creating time to think and reflect is powerful.
  • Learning outdoors in a less structured environment can be more relaxing for many learners.
  • We can use outdoor learning to create a ‘growth mindset’ in our boys – attitudes of resilience and not giving up.
  • Curiosity, creativity and imagination can easily be catered for and developed outdoors.
  • Risk is an intelligent behaviour and we must allow for risk taking, within set limits.
  • Greater collaboration and team based activities change mindsets and behaviours to become all inclusive.

Boys experience outdoor learning across the curriculum, all year round, to enhance learning experiences, life skills and development.
