School Life Overview
There are approximately 300 boys aged 5 to 11 in the Pre-Preparatory & Preparatory Schools. There are two parallel classes in Year 1 and Year 2, three parallel classes from Year 3 to Year 6.
Boys join the Pre-Preparatory School at 5+ (Year 1) or 7+ (Year 3). There are usually around 36 places at 5+ and 18 places at 7+ with Pre-Preparatory pupils transferring automatically to the Preparatory School. The boys are mixed into three classes combing Pre-Preparatory boys and our new intake at 7+.
Whenever boys join, there is a broad and challenging curriculum for them to relish. As a school we believe in lessons that have both pace and rigour as defining characteristics. We believe that academic excellence is a product of our approach to active and independent learning, with practical tasks and problem solving enabling our boys to develop their understanding in the deepest sense. Enthusiasm and excitement are key at this age range as is providing the stimulus for discussion and debate.
Pupils love to be challenged and have an insatiable curiosity about the world around them. Parents are welcomed into the School to support the curriculum and to help on outings. As well as Parent Consultation Evenings and Drop-in Sessions, there are Curriculum Evenings for parents to learn about our approach to particular subject areas and how they can best support their boys at home; we firmly believe that boys do best when school and home are working in true partnership.
Boys can arrive on site from 8.00am or 8.30am at the Pre-Preparatory site and the Preparatory School. Registration is at 8.40am and afterwards pupils are off to assembly, Hymn practice or have Form Time. Lessons are 45 minutes long with pupils in all years enjoying a full range of subjects across the school day. Younger pupils are mainly taught by their Form Teachers and older pupils benefit from specialist teachers across most subjects. Drama, sports and the arts are integral to our diverse curriculum and pupils may be moving from Science in the fully equipped laboratory to PE in our state of the art Sports Centre or even a lesson in our purpose built Outdoor Classroom.
There are both lunch time and after school co-curricular clubs and activities for all pupils throughout the week in the Preparatory School. There is a huge choice of food at lunch time, both hot and cold options with all dietary requirements catered for. The day ends at 3.15pm for most pupils, on certain days older pupils in Year 5 and 6 stay until 4.00pm.
From Year 3 boys may travel to and from school using the extensive coach service. Pre-Prep pupils may use the shuttle bus that runs from the campus at Elstree to the Pre-Prep site in Park Street near St. Albans. There are later coach services for older boys who stay for after school activities or matches. An after-school care facility is available for boys from eight years old and upwards who need to stay until 4.15pm or 5.30pm.
