Hockey has always been a priority sport at The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School for a considerable number of years. It demands speed, stamina and a mastery of intricate hand-eye coordination. Recently the sport has experienced an increase in interest and in participation in both recreational and competitive levels following the successes of the GB Teams (Bronze and Gold Medals by Team GB Women, 4th place finish by Team GB Men).
Like many other team sports, it has the capacity to develop a number of key attributes. Team work and cooperation, leadership skills and mutual respect are but a few. However, the senior reason we play team sports is for the friendship we develop with our team mates which last a lifetime.
At Habs, Hockey is played by all year groups, and provides a range of levels to suit all abilities. Recreational players will develop their skills and play in small sided games with the more advanced players training for fixtures at the weekend.
The School regularly competes in block fixtures against local schools, including Watford Grammar School, St Albans and Merchant Taylors, as well as schools further afield such as Stowe and Bishop Stortford Grammar School. The Under 14’s, Under 16’s and 1st XI regularly compete in county competitions with the 1st XI representing Hertfordshire in the East Regional Knockout rounds for the last 3 years.
The School tours every year to the KES Festival in Bath with the 1st XI squad and, for the first time last year, with an Under 16/Under 15 development squad.
In October half term the School also took a senior squad of 17 pupils to Barcelona to play and train against some of the regions best clubs.
