Standard School Curriculum
The standard Haberdashers’ curriculum is that the majority of pupils follow four academic courses in the Lower 6th (Y12) and three courses to A Level in the Upper 6th (Y13). Pupils wishing to take both Mathematics and Further Mathematics together with two other A Level subjects are able to do so. In certain circumstances a pupil not offering Further Mathematics may take all four Lower 6th courses to A Level.
A small number of pupils each year choose to study three academic courses in the Lower 6th and continue to A Level.
Haberdashers’ offers twenty-three rigorously academic courses of equal status and validity at A Level. A diverse range of subject combinations is possible. The pupils are able to choose their subjects freely and there are no restrictions put on the combinations they choose.
We offer no vocational qualifications at Haberdashers’.
Lower 6th Examinations
Pupils sit externally verified examinations at the end of the Lower 6th. For many subjects these are AS examinations which are certificated. For Computer Science Geography, History, Music and Politics these are stand-alone examinations sat under JCQ conditions in the examination hall and marked, assessed and moderated in line with JCQ criteria. The results are verified and assessed by an external source, i.e. another HMC school or equivalent.
A Level Predicted grades
These are based on the pupil’s performance in the Lower 6th examinations, his progress in the Sixth Form to date and his potential at A Level.
Independent Research: The Aske Project
All Lower 6th pupils are expected to complete the equivalent of a 3000-4000 word independent research project on a topic of their choice. For those projects written in another language the word limit is halved. Projects may take any form: report, short story, play, musical composition etc., as the individual chooses.
The project is launched in September of the Lower 6th year and all pupils are taught how to conduct research. The pupils are each assigned an Aske Project Supervisor based upon the title of their project, whom they meet up to four times in the course of the academic year. The final project is submitted in July of the Lower 6th year and is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. All Distinction projects are further assessed by external moderators who are subject specialists in their chosen field. Following this assessment, pupils are given a Viva during the first term of their Upper 6th year.
All pupils study for a minimum of ten GCSE (or IGCSE) subjects. The standard requirement is:
